NEW REOPENING UPDATES

  • Beginning Tuesday, May 26, miniature golf, batting cages, and bowling alleys may resume operations if they can meet required safety protocols.
  • Beginning Tuesday, May 26, skills training for all sports, including contact sports, may resume if required safety protocols can be met. Tournaments, games, and competitions for contact sports are still prohibited.
  • Beginning Monday, June 1, catering and banquet centers may reopen if they can meet required safety protocols. Protocols include six feet between tables, no congregating, and a crowd size of no more than 300 people.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

Ohio's unemployment rate has hit 16.8%, the highest since the state's current record keeping system was developed almost 50 years ago.

The figure released Friday follows nine weeks of job losses following the decision to shut down much of Ohio's economy to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Bret Crow is a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. He says the last time the unemployment rate was even near this figure was the 14% recorded in December 1982 and January 1983. Crow says the 16.8% is the highest since the current statistical record keeping began in 1976.

EDUCATION

365体育手机投注Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory at Lake Erie will remain closed until at least July 6, affecting its educational programming on South Bass and Gibraltar islands, history programs, visitors’ center operations and light house tours.

The grounds of the South Bass Island Lighthouse remain open to the public with social distancing protocols in place.

CINCINNATI ZOO REOPENS

365体育手机投注The Cincinnati Zoo announced a limited reopening on June 1 beginning with zoo members, with tickets sold only in advance online and with staggered entrance times. Indoor exhibits will be closed at first, but visitors will be able to walk through the hippo and elephant exhibits.

NURSING HOME DEATHS

365体育手机投注The number of deaths from the coronavirus in Ohio’s nursing homes is now over 1,200. That means long-term centers account for nearly seven out of 10 deaths from the virus in the state.

365体育手机投注The latest Ohio Department of Health statistics include all of the coronavirus deaths since the pandemic began.

As of Wednesday, 1,246 residents of Ohio’s long-term care facilities have died from the virus.

Gov. DeWine has said he’s working on a plan to ramp up testing for the coronavirus at nursing homes. That includes deploying 14 teams of Ohio National Guard members to assist with the testing.
